Dr Sarah Buckingham

My clinical background of psychotherapeutic intervention and health promotion (recently specializing in addiction recovery treatment) led to a five-year investigation of a variety of groups exploring the social and psychological factors that may underpin successful addiction recovery. A synthesis of the social identity approach (SIT/SCT) and aspects of social cognition has theoretically given foundation to the work. This empirical research has examined how identity influences treatment success and also how competing identities interact within an individual resulting in my PhD thesis (viva voce 09/09/14) entitled “The addiction recovery model of social identification (ARMS): A positively distinct approach”. This work has been based in the Department of Psychology at London South Bank University and supervised by Professor Ian p Albery and Dr Daniel Frings.
