Ian Whyte
Dr Ian Whyte has spent over 30 years in further and higher education where he developed and led UG and PG programmes, managed teams and departments, and worked across organisations. A graduate of the University of Glasgow (MEd) and the University of Sunderland (PhD) Ian’s research interests are eclectic and stretch through aspects of sport, physical activity and health. Ian retired recently after 20 years at the University of Sunderland (Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellbeing) and he now continues to work with colleagues in the UK and across Europe through a newly formed research and consultancy company, I Double U Ltd.
Use of performance and image enhancing drugs in ex-Services personnel
This paper will present findings from an exploratory study examining the use of performance and image enhancing drugs (PIEDs) among active military personnel and veterans. Use of PIEDs, such as steroids, are a health concern and have a potential impact on combat readiness for those still serving. As PIEDS are becoming more easily accessible, a deeper understanding of perceptions and motivations around use in military personnel and veterans is necessary to understand what underpins their use, and provide information to help to shape interventions that aim to reduce the impacts on health, well-being, social circumstances, and, in serving personnel, military performance.
