Ann McNeill
Ann McNeill is currently Professor of Tobacco Addiction in the National Addictions Centre at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), King’s College London, and is also Vice Dean (Culture, Diversity & Inclusion) at the IoPPN. Ann has worked in nicotine and tobacco research for 35 years and focuses largely on reducing the population level impact of smoking through the application of tobacco control policies and interventions, including harm reduction strategies. She currently leads e-cigarette evidence updates for Public Health England and will draw on this work for her presentation. Ann is a trustee of the Society for the Study of Addiction.
Vaping in England and key controversies
Vaping is one of the most contested areas in nicotine research. McNeill will give an overview of vaping in relation to smoking and discuss current the prevalence of both vaping and smoking in England for both adults and youth, and the policy framework. She will then compare this with selected other countries internationally. She will also discuss some of the key controversies in vaping which include whether they lead young people to smoke, whether they discourage adult smokers from quitting smoking, the involvement of the tobacco industry, and its health effects.
