Dr Gisella Hanley Santos

Biography

Dr Gisella Hanley Santos is a lecturer in criminology and criminal justice studies at Plymouth University. She has a longstanding interest in issues to do with drug use, rehabilitation and desistance, having carried out research with young offenders in their transition to adulthood; drug and alcohol users in a Community Justice Court; steroid users; and street children and young offenders in a Therapeutic Community in Brazil. She has previously taken time out from academia to set up and run an award-winning drug rehabilitation programme for street children in the northeast of Brazil and is now carrying out follow-up research with those who went through the programme ten years ago.
