Dr Gordon Hay

Dr Gordon Hay is a Reader in the Centre for Public Health at Liverpool John Moores University. His research focuses on the application of epidemiological and statistical methods within the area of drug or alcohol use, for example by developing and applying statistical methods to estimate the number of people who use drugs such as heroin or crack cocaine. He is currently working on the ninth in a series of annual opiate and / or crack cocaine use estimates for England and a similar study in Ireland. He is the UK Scientific Expert to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction for their High Risk Drug Use Key Indicator.

In collaboration with colleagues in the Centre for Public Health, he is involved in a number of evaluations of drug or alcohol treatment services across the north of England. He also has a particular interest in drug-related mortality, including research looking at drug-related deaths at the local level and research examining differences in mortality between Scotland and England.

The Centre for Public Health (CPH) is a vibrant research and teaching community working at a local, regional, national and international level. It specialises in applied research and educational programmes addressing health issues at all levels from policy development to service delivery. Dr Hay currently supervises two PhD students working in the area of substance use and is keen to supervise more.
