Biography

Michael Wheatley is a Senior Manager with Her Majesty’s Prison Service and has specific responsibility for co-ordinating substance misuse services within the eight high security prisons.  Michael has been actively involved in the development and implementation of clinical services, the CARAT Service, the FOCUS rehabilitation programme, drug testing (both voluntary and mandatory), complementary therapies and supply reduction initiatives since taking up post in 1998.  Michael has presented widely on problematic drug misuse within prison settings informed by over 20 years of experience of working within the substance misuse field.  He has a number of publications in press including drug misuse in prisons, the effectiveness of auricular acupuncture as a treatment intervention and an outcome evaluation of a high intensity treatment programme with long term high security prisons.  He graduated from the Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge in Applied Criminology, Penology and Prison Management after being named as student of the year 2005.
