Since 1998, England has a national treatment strategy which involves brief advice from health professionals backed up by a network of local NHS Stop Smoking Services (NHS SSS) offering specialist intensive support and medications to stop smoking. This presentation will describe how this situation came about and the extent to which it is evidence based. It will also describe how the strategy has evolved over the last decade and discuss how successful the services are at reaching smokers in the most disadvantaged communities where smoking prevalence is highest. Recent research will also be presented which indicates the impact of England’s treatment strategy on smoking and quitting behaviour in comparison with other countries.
