Mobilizers, mechanisms, and moderators of addiction recovery

There has been increasing acceptance that there are multiple pathways to remission and long-term recovery for individuals suffering from substance use disorder (SUD). These include treatment- and mutual-aid- assisted, as well as unassisted, or “natural”, recovery. Research has begun to clarify the factors that: a) mobilize behavior change and lead to recovery, b) mediate or explain recovery over time, and c) moderate or influence whether mediators differ across different individuals. Using research examples from criminal justice and clinical populations suffering from SUD, this talk reviews these areas of investigation and shows how individuals may utilize the same recovery support structures in different ways depending on their particular recovery needs, challenges, and life-contexts.
